About The Grey Gnome

Welcome to The Grey Gnome, a place to share advice, stories, and experiences with gardening that will never show up in a magazine spread or as an award-winning masterpiece.  My yard may be a mess, nothing goes quite perfectly, but all are welcome to learn and share gardening and growing tips at The Grey Gnome.

My Story

The Grey Gnome (my husband named him Greg) came from our old house.  He is a jolly old fellow that my late grandfather bought that sat in our backyard for over 30 years and moved with us a couple of years ago to McGregor, TX.  Along with Greg the Grey Gnome, we inherited a rose garden, two young magnolia trees, a crepe myrtle, a prickly pear cactus, and brought along a lavender plant that we have managed not to kill… so far.

This year, my grandmother passed away, and I inherited some houseplants from the funeral, for which I have worked very hard to learn more about and care for properly.  I left my job as an accounts payable clerk to work at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I developed a great desire to work in the rose garden and try my hand at growing other beautiful plants, some from starter plants, some from seed.  I learned a lot very quickly, and I’ve had plenty of failures but some awesome successes as well.

Why The Blog?

Anybody can learn to garden and care for houseplants.  One of the interesting things about gardening is the difference of opportunities and problems across climate and latitude.  I live in Central Texas, so most of my posts on outdoor gardening
will relate to this area, but I hope to hear from people everywhere.  Houseplants can thrive in anyone’s home and bring joy to its occupants while improving air quality and releasing clean oxygen into the home.

This blog is for anyone – people whose lives are busy with other things but who still want to bring a little life and color to their home (or office), people who can’t afford to have their yard landscaped with every little bloom in its perfect spot, people, like me, who just want to grow something beautiful, and in some cases, delicious!

The Goal:

I’m here to share what I’ve learned and continue learning, to help you find the right plants for your space and time limitations, to share moments of beauty and utter and complete failure.  There will be a whole section specifically for reviews regarding books, products, and tools I have personally used that helped or harmed or did nothing at all for my garden and houseplants.  I will discuss growing from seed and from small plants, specific needs for germination, and how to deal with garden pests and other problems.  I’ll talk about growing flowers and food and recommedations for container gardening and in-ground plants.

Everybody at all levels of gardening is welcome! Come to learn, stay to share, enjoy the beauty around you that you, yourself can create!

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

All the best,

Bunny (and Greg)
